Moving bed bifilm reactor (MBBR)
Moving bed biofilm reactor "AK-MBBR"
Moving bed biofilm reactor or “MBBR” is an expanded biological waste water treatment technology where the activated sludge grows at a suspended media surface resulting in the formation of a biofilm. Microorganisms in a biofilm wastewater treatment process are more resilient to processing disturbances compared to other types of biological treatment processes. Thus, biofilm wastewater treatment technologies can be considerably more robust when compared to conventional technologies. ATHANASIOS KOUTSOUKOS S.A. offers the "AK-MBBR" in order to enhance or upgrade treatment potential of activated sludge processes.
In the “AK-MBBR” technology the biofilm grows inside a plastic carrier with a large internal surface area. The formation of the biofilm has an overall impact on the ratio of the available biomass to the incoming pollution F/Mv. The ratio is increased to almost double compared to the ratio of a conventional biological waste water treatment plant. In addition, the concentration of the activated sludge (Mv) in the aeration tank can be obtained at 10-11kg MLSS/m3 reaction volume. The activated sludge remains attached to the surface of the medium and is not in suspension. Only a very small proportion of the MLSS remains in suspension with a concentration of less than 1kg/m3. This value indicates a high initial settling velocity (ISV) as the sludge passes to the clarification phase.
The formed biofilm in the surface of the biocarriers degrades the waste pollutants progressively as the metabolism reactions take place. In order for the reactions to take place, an excessive amount of air is required which is supplied by the "AKEMO" aeration system.
Several biocarriers are available for different processes and for any kind of waste.
